This web-page describes a project funded by JNCC and facilitated by MRAG and UNEP-WCMC on ecological structure and function. It provides access to a discussion document that is currently being used in a stakeholder consultation process.
The objective of this project is to arrive at consensus, through consultation, on practical definitions of ecological structure and function. There is growing interest in the use of these concepts to apply the ecosystem approach in monitoring systems, but also a range of different definitions in use.
The discussion document provides an overview of current definitions of structure and function in use, and the main similarities and differences between them. It asks for feedback and comment from stakeholders on the document, and their opinions on the most effective and practical definition. The consultation period will run until 31st May 2007, and lead to a revised document for circulation with options for a way forward.
