Program development begins with clear specification of goals, purposes, and desired outputs. MRAG uses sophisticated project planning and management tools to create program frameworks, plan human resource use and define realistic project milestones. MRAG uses these tools for all its projects and has gained considerable experience in their application in the resource management sector.
MRAG is responsible for the implementation of the Fisheries Management Science Programme (FMSP) of the Department For International Development (DFID) of the UK Government. This program, with an annual budget of approximately $1 million, is part of the Renewable Natural Resources Research Strategy (RNRRS), designed by DFID to give research support to developing countries. Priority is given to work on fisheries management and the optimization of benefits from fisheries to stakeholders in developing countries. In accordance with DFID policy, the program also seeks to integrate conservation of natural resources with the overall national, regional, and local economic growth strategies of recipient countries.
The FMSP focuses primarily on demand-led research, with projects being initiated in response to the needs of producers, policy makers and other stakeholders. This has been achieved through the forging of strong in-country relationships for the identification of researchable constraints to development. Stakeholder participation in the design and implementation of solutions has been an integral part of our development projects for many years. MRAG is currently directing more than 10 major projects under the FMSP in several developing countries and regions, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Africa, the western Indian Ocean and the South Pacific. The total FMSP project portfolio has numbered 34 projects over the last eight years.
