Through our involvement in artisanal fisheries (both coastal and inland), MRAG have demonstrated a capability in evaluating and developing alternative governance structures for fisheries management, including the use of co-management. Many of our projects have a direct positive impact upon social development on developing rural communities.
We have had extensive involvement in resource management projects in developing countries. These projects place substantial emphasis on integrating conservation and natural resource management with the overall national, regional, and local economic growth strategies of recipient countries. We frequently build conferences, seminars and workshops into our projects, as well as other less traditional means of facilitating collaboration and sharing of information on sustainable natural resources management. Our staff incorporates consultants who are skilled at working with local communities. There is considerable emphasis on the uptake and impact of the products of research projects within DFID’s Fisheries Management Science Programme. This has strengthened our relationships with in-country institutions and enhanced the successful uptake of the products of our research, particularly in developing countries. MRAG has also run a number of technical training workshops in fisheries stock assessment and management, both as integral parts of larger projects and as stand-alone training Programmes.
